The restoration of the Susan B. House, an edifice that is now 150 years old, has been an ongoing project since 1998. Today, the restoration is 80% complete. The result will be an exceptional transformation of the House to its appearance the last time Susan B. Anthony herself was here. On the exterior, we have secured the foundation, replaced the roof, repaired the chimneys, re-pointed the brick, and updated mechanical and electrical systems. Inside the House, we have tackled major structural and mechanical elements, including restoring or reconstructing walls, ceilings, floors, and windows, using the talents of local artisans who are skilled in historic restoration. We have also restored the House's aesthetics by installing historic-reproduction wallpaper, replicating the original faux-grain painting on doors, floors, and windows, and replacing late-twentieth-century light fixtures with modern equivalents of the original gas lights. Our work is not yet complete, but we invite you to come and see all that we have accomplished thus far. We're confident you'll agree that the change is remarkable and that Susan B. Anthony herself would feel right at home again at 17 Madison Street. |

School #20 Picnic at VM
Ruth Johnstone and her third graders filled the courtyard with exuberance and laughter during the annual picnic sponsored by Valley Manor. For the past several years, VM residents have tutored at School #20 and invited the kids over for social gatherings. Ms. Johnstone, a master teacher with the city school district, has taught all over the world. She still works weekends for our Food Service department, where she started years ago when she first came to the States from Jamaica. (Photo courtesy of Claire Brown) |
